On Saturday, Narok governor Samwel Tunai’s helicopter surffered a mechanical breakdown and crashed shortly after take-off. The Narok County governor and three of his passengers survived the crash. They were all rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment. Reliable sources told the Daily Post Kenya that the Narok County boss was on his way to a funeral for the late Paul Lepore, at Olenkipejus village in Melili, Narok County when the accident occurred.
On a video reaching our news desk, the governor’s helicopter can be seen struggling to take-off for more than two minutes. Then when the aircraft eventually takes off, it travels for approximately 75 meters before it somersaults and crashes. A gathered crowd of spectators can be heard screaming immediately after witnessing the accident.
Following the accident, Council of Governors Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya issued a statement to confirm that governor Tunai has indeed survived the accident and is currently in hospital to receive medical attention. Mr. Oparanya then urged all residents of Narok County to maintain calm.
“We request the people of Narok County to remain calm as the doctors attend to the Governor. The Council of Governors wishes Governor Tunai and the other affected passengers a speedy recovery.
“We hope that he will soon be on his feet and ready to go back and serve the people of Narok County. We assure you, of our unwavering support during this period of recovery,” he stated.
Less than 24 hours before the Narok Governor was involved in the helicopter accident, he held a consultative meeting with German Business Association, Kenya (alias GIZ Kenya) in an attempt to promote economic cooperation between Narok County and the European nation.
“Kenya has always had a great development partner in the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)Â has been supporting the Government of Kenya with various initiatives in the focal areas of sustainable economic development,” the governor stated.
