A video has emerged of President Uhuru Kenyatta and deputy president William Ruto opposing each other regarding the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) project. In the video (embedded at the bottom of this article) President Uhuru Kenyatta talks about why the country needs BBI while his deputy president William Ruto talks about why the country do not need BBI, but rather has other priorities that it needs to focus on first.
Mr. Kenyatta says that the country needs BBI to fix the polarizing tribal alliances that have plagued the country since independence as well as stumping-up the scourge of corruption that is crippling the country due to lost revenue meant for national projects and the delivery of services to the citizens.
Whereas the president’s arguments can be seen as being valid, it is worth to note that if indeed Mr. Kenyatta was serious about fixing the country’s problems, he could have done so long time ago as he has been in power for more than 8 years.
Also, remember that President Kenyatta’s own family members have been implicated in massive corruption scandals in the country including the recent KEMSA scandal in which billions of money meant for the prevention of the spread of Covid-19 was stolen by his close political allies such as David Murathe and the president’s own sister and niece
The president says BBI’s main purpose is to unite the country and NOT help him cling to power. But people should ask why changing the constitution is necessary in order to unite the country. Why can’t the president help unite the country without holding a referendum to change the constitution? Is the constitution standing in the way of unity? NO!
BBI has the main purpose of holding the referendum in order to change the constitution and then create the powerful role of a Prime Minister which president Uhuru Kenyatta will vie for. The president is barred from running for president in 2022 because he has exhausted his two terms maximum in office. It is time for him to pack up and leave.
As the deputy president William Ruto said in the video below, Kenyans have other priorities such as creating jobs lost due to Covid-19, the mushrooming of foreign debt, poor roads, rising cost of living and many other things that are more important than changing the constitution that is barely 10 years old.
Deputy President William Ruto also makes it known that the president has not expressly said that he wants to cling to power past his 2022 mandate. But Mr. Ruto makes it known that BBI is not a priority at this time as there are more pressing issues to focus on.
