Angry herders of the Mai Mahiu area have blocked the Nairobi-Narok road at the Mai Mahiu junction after a speeding lorry hit and killed four cows belonging to their neighbor. The accident occurred this morning when a lorry that was shipping building and construction concrete hit the livestock as they were closing the road in search of greener pastures.
According to the eyewitnesses, the lorry driver was not paying attention as he approached Mai Mahiu and before the front-end of his lorry contacted the bovines, it was a little too late as he tried in vain to apply brakes.
Three cows died on the spot while two more sustained serious injuries such as broken limbs and crushed skull.
This is not the first time there has been a vehicle-livestock collision at the Mai Mahiu junction. In February 9th 2015, a whopping 56 sheep were killed by a speeding lorry in this area as the livestock was trying to cross the road. Similarly, irate members of the pastoralist community blocked the busy road for more than an hour adversely paralyzing traffic flow.
The carnage proceeded a similar incidence in January 2015 when 26 sheep were mowed down by an overloaded speeding lorry in the same area. Also, in May 2018, 14 cows were killed at the Mai Mahiu junction when a Matatu rammed into them.
A month prior, traffic was paralyzed for a good part of the day at Nairegia Enkare area along Narok-Maai Mahiu Highway, after residents barricaded the busy highway protesting the killing of 103 sheep by a speeding Lorry. Such scenes are common.
At the scene of the latest incidence, the carcasses were littered all over as eager members of the public milled around with knives and paper bags ready to get a piece of the meat. A few moments later, the police towed away the culprit vehicle to the Mai Mahiu police station and the driver would be arraigned in court later.
